International Youth Day

Each year on 12 August, International Youth Day (IYD) is assigned a theme; a conceptual slogan that communicates the scope, direction, and objectives of the year’s youth initiatives and that also provides a unifying banner from under which individuals can draw the inspiration to take action. The theme chosen for International Youth Day 2012 – Building a Better World: Partnering with Youth – is a global call to action for young men and women, as well as other stakeholders around the world, to develop and engage in partnerships with and for youth towards building a better world.

World Population Day

World Population Day is an outgrowth of interest generated by the Day of Five Billion person, which was observed on the 11th of July 1987. In 1989 the governing council of the United Nations Development Programme recommended that 11 July be observed annually as World Population Day as a way to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues. The United Nations Population Fund advocated for this day in order to give visibility to population issues in the context of overall development plans and programmes. Each year UNFPA selects a different theme to rally around.
