Ruva* is a 15-year-old girl from Kadoma whose life took a drastic turn when she discovered she was pregnant. With her boyfriend fleeing to South Africa, Ruva was left to face the challenges of pregnancy alone. Her mother, who is not working, was deeply worried about how to support her daughter during this difficult time.
Amidst these struggles, Ruva received vital support from UNFPA through the Emergency Action Fund (EF). This initiative was part of a broader effort by UNFPA to strengthen cholera prevention and response efforts while ensuring that essential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services continued.
The project focused on saving lives and protecting the dignity of women, girls, and other vulnerable groups affected by the cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe. It ensured the continuity of SRH services, provided crucial supplies, and supported infection prevention in cholera treatment centers, all while enhancing coordination and partnership under the leadership of the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
As part of this initiative,Ruva received the Cholera Mama Kit provided by UNFPA. This kit, one of the 520 Mama/Maternity Kits handed over to the Ministry of Health and Child Care, is specifically designed to offer essential support to pregnant and lactating mothers. The kit not only helps maintain hygiene but also empowers mothers like Ruva to take control of their reproductive health and ensure the well-being of their babies. Some of the contents of the kit include baby clothes, towels, napkins, soap, a blanket, a bag, a wrap, sanitary wear, a bucket and grooming essentials.
At a time when Ruva felt abandoned and uncertain, the Cholera Mama Kit became a vital lifeline, offering her the resources and reassurance she needed to navigate the journey of motherhood. Ruva’s story is a testament to the impact of initiatives like these, which aim to support vulnerable mothers and their children in Cholera affected communities across Zimbabwe.
